Protect staff from exposure to airborne oil and coolant mist particles

In partnership with Filtermist Systems Limited, Chem Arrow Europe is able to offer a wide range of products and services designed to protect people from exposure to airborne oil and coolant mist particles, including:

  • Stand-alone extraction for use on individual machine tools
  • Centralised systems for use on manufacturing cells
  • Turnkey service including site audits, system design, specification, installation and commissioning
  • Aftersales services including approved routine maintenance, spare parts, COSHH compliant LEV Testing, air monitoring and air sampling

COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations require all employers to minimise exposure to harmful airborne contaminants. Using Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) is widely recognised as the most effective way of ensuring harmful airborne particles are removed from workshop air.

LEV systems capture contaminated air at source, filter it and then return clean air, which is safe to breathe, to the workshop. More details can be found on the HSE’s website: www.hse.gov.uk/lev. COSHH regulations require all LEV systems to be tested by a competent person at least once every 14 months to ensure they are performing as intended.

In addition to minimising risks and ensuring compliance with COSHH regulations, effective LEV also offers the following benefits:

  • Consistent component quality: Exhausting warm air out of the machine tool enclosure can support component quality by ensuring the temperature within the enclosure remains constant
  • Reduced heating costs
  • Lower cleaning bills
  • A reduction in oil residue build-up in machine tools and on components

What is oil mist?

Manufacturing processes including milling, drilling, turning and grinding all generate oil or coolant mist, volumes of which will vary depending on the nature of the application and the type of coolant used.

Why LEV?

Effective oil and coolant mist extraction is vital. If left in the atmosphere mist particles can:

  • Result in occupational diseases including asthma, COPD and allergic extrinsic alveolitis
  • Form an oily layer on floors which is a potential slip hazard
  • Cause damage to electrical switchgear and circuitry
  • Coat ventilation pipes which is a potential fire risk
